Mobile games, read closely

Nine Android games, played before we wrote a word.

ModeEval is a small editorial desk in Australia. We install Android games from Google Play, live with them for a fortnight, and write down what actually happens — the good sessions, the flat ones, and the ad breaks in between.

Section one

Nine genres, one title each

The catalogue is deliberately narrow. Rather than list forty puzzle games, we keep one title per genre and replace it only when something clearly reads better. Here is the shape of the current list.

  • Farm simulation

Machinery, paddocks and a slow clock. Sessions measured in seasons rather than minutes.

    Farming Simulator 16

  • Hidden object

Painted rooms, a list along the bottom edge, and the quiet satisfaction of a cleared scene.

    Hidden Objects: Find It!

  • Pool and billiards

A cue, a drag, a spin diagram. Table sports translate to a phone screen better than most.

    Super Billiards Real 8 Ball

  • Jigsaw for small hands

Chunky pieces, forgiving drop zones, no timer anywhere near the board.

Puzzle games for kids 2-5 year

  • Zoo tycoon

Habitats, keepers and visitor paths that keep moving while the phone is in a pocket.

    Idle Tap Zoo

  • Block puzzle

Ten by ten, no clock, and a board that will happily wait until tomorrow.

    BlockPuz

  • Merge puzzle

Numbered tiles fall, neighbours combine, and planning two moves ahead genuinely helps.

    Merge Block Puzzle

  • Offroad driving

Open terrain, suspension travel and a hill that has to be climbed in one piece.

OTR - Offroad Car Driving Game

  • Gardening and decor

Paving, planting and furniture, with a light puzzle layer between renovations.

Section two

The catalogue, in the order we filed it

Every entry carries the same four things: the screenshots as the developer published them, the Google Play rating recorded on 12 August 2026, a paragraph written from our own log, and two blunt lines — what the title is good for, and what to keep an eye on.

Farming Simulator 16

GIANTS Software · Android

GIANTS Software has cut its farm sim down to pocket size without hollowing it out. You get a plot of land, a shed of licensed machinery and a very patient clock: sow wheat, canola and sugar beet, tend them, harvest, then haul the load to the depot and decide what the shed needs next. A session can be five minutes of tending or an hour of planning the next paddock, and both feel like the same game.

Good for
Long, quiet sittings, ideally on a tablet.
Keep an eye on
The tutorial is brisk. The first hour asks you to read.

Hidden Objects: Find It!

CASUAL AZUR GAMES · Android

A tidy version of the search-and-find scene: crowded rooms, a list of items along the bottom, and a clock that nudges rather than nags. The art is hand-painted and objects recur across levels, so later rooms feel familiar in a pleasant way rather than a lazy one. It suits short visits — one scene, then put the phone down.

Good for
Five spare minutes and the largest screen you own.
Keep an eye on
Advertising breaks arrive between scenes, not during them.

Super Billiards Real 8 Ball

EWG STUDIO · Android

EWG STUDIO cares more about the cue than the ceremony. Aim with a drag, set spin on a small ball diagram, take the shot. Practice tables, timed challenges and one-against-one matches all share the same physics, and the table stays readable on a small phone, which is the hard part of putting a pool hall on Android.

Good for
Short matches while the kettle boils.
Keep an eye on
Online tables need a steady connection to feel fair.

Puzzle games for kids 2-5 year

Bimi Boo Kids Learning Games for Toddlers FZ-LLC · Android

Bimi Boo builds for very small hands: chunky jigsaw pieces, forgiving drop zones and animal scenes that applaud a finished board. Difficulty climbs from four pieces to a couple of dozen, and nothing is timed. The interface is picture-led, so a child who cannot read yet can still move between puzzles without an adult driving.

Good for
A toddler and a grown-up sharing one couch.
Keep an eye on
It is aimed squarely at ages two to five and does not pretend otherwise.

Idle Tap Zoo: Tap, Build & Upg

Tech Tree Games · Android

Tech Tree Games starts you with one enclosure and a tap. Habitats fill, keepers appear, upgrades keep the visitor paths busy while the phone is in your pocket — progress carries on offline, which is the whole point of an idle title. The collecting side, with rare species and themed areas, gives it a destination beyond watching counters tick.

Good for
Background play across a week rather than an evening.
Keep an eye on
Pacing slows noticeably once the first zoo is full.

BlockPuz: Block Puzzle Games

HDuo Fun Games · Android

A wooden-board reading of the classic block-fitting puzzle: drag shapes onto a ten-by-ten grid, clear full lines and columns, keep space for whatever comes next. There is no timer, so a half-finished board can sit for days. HDuo has added picture modes that fill a silhouette as you place pieces, which hands each level a small finish line.

Good for
Thinking slowly on a tram or a train.
Keep an eye on
Joint highest-rated title in this catalogue, and the hardest to put down.

Merge Block Puzzle

Game Maker Ltd. · Android

Numbered blocks drop into a narrow board and matching neighbours combine into the next tile in the sequence. It borrows the arithmetic of the tile-merging classics but adds gravity and a visible queue, so looking two moves ahead genuinely changes the board. Rounds are short, which keeps the whole thing honest.

Good for
One-handed play while standing up.
Keep an eye on
The board fills faster than it looks like it will.

OTR - Offroad Car Driving Game

DogByte Games · Android

DogByte Games drops you into open terrain with a four-wheel drive and no lap markers. The driving is the content: choosing a line up a rocky slope, feeling the suspension load and unload, getting a vehicle over a ridge in one piece. There is a garage of trucks and buggies to work through, plus a shared map where other drivers appear alongside you.

Good for
Sandbox driving with no stopwatch anywhere.
Keep an eye on
The physics favour patience; speed mostly ends in a rollover.

ALTENIA · Android

ALTENIA has made a decorating game with a light puzzle layer underneath: finish a board, then choose the paving, the planting and the furniture for the next corner of the yard. Lulu’s story runs quietly along beside the renovations, told in short scenes. The palette is soft and the pace is slow on purpose, which is rarer than it sounds.

Good for
Evenings when you want something gentle and tidy.
Keep an eye on
Decor choices are cosmetic; the story keeps to its own line.

Section three

How a title gets into the catalogue

Nothing here is scored from a store listing. Each title is installed, played and logged before a paragraph is written, and the process is the same for all nine.

  1. 01

    Install clean

A fresh device profile, no carried-over save data, the Australian store listing. We note the install size and what the game asks for on first launch.

  2. 02

Live with it for a fortnight

At least fourteen days on a phone, and on a tablet where the game supports one. Short sessions and long ones, on the couch and on public transport.

  3. 03

    Log the dull parts

Session length, how often advertising interrupts, what changes between day one and day ten, and whether the game still opens easily in week two.

  4. 04

    Write, then check again

The entry is written from the log, then the Play listing is opened one last time so the rating, the developer name and the store details still match what we publish.

Section four

Three picks for three kinds of evening

All nine are worth your time or they would not be listed. These three are the ones the desk kept reopening after the review period had finished.

BlockPuz screenshot: a wooden silhouette filling with placed blocks

Pick one · the five-minute gap

BlockPuz: Block Puzzle Games

The one that survives a crowded tram. No clock, no session to lose, and a board that holds its shape until you come back to it. It also carries the joint highest Play rating in the catalogue at 4.8, which for once matches how it feels to use.

HDuo Fun Games · block puzzle · Android

Farming Simulator 16 screenshot: a harvester cutting a wheat field beside a farmyard

Pick two · the long sit

Farming Simulator 16

The only title here that rewards an uninterrupted hour. Plan the rotation, run the machinery, watch a paddock go from bare soil to harvest. On a tablet it is closer to a desktop simulation than to a phone game, and its 4.1 rating hides how specific its audience is.

GIANTS Software · farm simulation · Android

Puzzle games for kids 2-5 year screenshot: a koala jigsaw with a puzzle mode selector

Pick three · with a child nearby

Puzzle games for kids 2-5 year

Handed to a three-year-old, it needed no explanation, which was the whole test. Big pieces, no timer, nothing that punishes a wrong drop. Rated 3.9 on a small number of ratings, and the smallest catalogue entry we have by install size.

Section eight

About the desk, and how this site works

ModeEval is a two-person editorial desk working out of Australia. We started it because the lists we kept finding were assembled from store descriptions by people who had clearly never opened the games. Our answer is small and slow: nine Android titles, one per genre, each installed and lived with before anything is published.

We write in plain English, in the same order every time, and we say what a title asks of you as readily as what it gives back. If an entry reads lukewarm, that is the honest result of a fortnight with it, not a negotiating position.

How this site works

Titles are chosen by the desk, one per genre, and nothing joins the catalogue without a fortnight of use behind it. Star figures are copied from the Google Play listing on the date shown; the written notes and the picks are our own view, settled before any advertising placement is arranged and not altered afterwards. Advertising links are labelled where they appear, and catalogue places stay editorial. The full statement, including our relationship to Google LLC and to the developers listed, is set out in our terms of use.

  • Played, not skimmed

Fourteen days minimum with every title, logged as we go.

  • Ratings copied, not guessed

Every star figure is read off the Play listing on the day and dated on the page.

  • Advertising kept separate

Placements sit outside the editorial columns and are labelled as advertising.

  • Corrections welcome

Tell us an entry is out of date and it is checked again within the week.
